Why Test Cement?
Cement quality directly determines concrete strength, durability, and setting behavior. Cement laboratories run a suite of tests on every production batch to verify conformance with EN 197-1, ASTM C150, or other governing specifications. Each test requires specific, calibrated equipment.
Core Cement Tests and Equipment
1. Compressive & Flexural Strength (EN 196-1 / ASTM C109)
Mortar prisms (40Γ40Γ160 mm for EN 196-1) are cast, cured, and tested at 2, 7, and 28 days. A cement flexural/compression testing machine applies three-point bending first (flexural strength), then compression on the broken halves. Machines must have two load ranges: typically 0β10 kN for flexure and 0β300 kN for compression.
2. Consistency (EN 196-3 / ASTM C187)
A Vicat apparatus determines the water-to-cement ratio for standard consistency paste. The 10 mm Vicat plunger is released and penetration depth measured. Standard consistency is reached when the plunger stops 5β7 mm above the base plate (EN) or penetrates 10 Β± 1 mm from the bottom (ASTM).
3. Setting Time (EN 196-3 / ASTM C191)
Using the same Vicat apparatus with a 1 mm needle, initial and final setting times are measured. Initial set = when penetration reaches 25 mm below the surface. Final set = when the needle leaves no impression. Automated Vicat machines record the entire setting curve.
4. Soundness (EN 196-3 / ASTM C151)
Le Chatelier expansion apparatus (EN) or autoclave (ASTM C151) detects unsound expansion caused by free lime or magnesia. The Le Chatelier mold is filled with standard consistency paste, cured, and boiled for 1 hour. Expansion is measured as the opening of the split mold.
5. Fineness (EN 196-6 / ASTM C204)
The Blaine air permeability apparatus measures specific surface area (cmΒ²/g) β a key indicator of cement reactivity. Finer cement hydrates faster and achieves higher early strength.
